Volkswagen Tukan Revealed as New Compact Pickup Rivaling the Fiat Strada

Volkswagen has unveiled the new Tukan, a compact pickup developed specifically for the South American market. Designed to replace the long-running Saveiro, the new model will compete directly with popular rivals such as the Fiat Strada and Chevrolet Montana.
The Tukan was designed, engineered and developed entirely for the South American market. Volkswagen says the new pickup combines the practicality of a work vehicle with the comfort and technology expected from a modern passenger car.
The model will be offered in two distinct versions: the single-cab Robust, designed primarily for commercial and utility use, and the double-cab Extreme, which targets customers looking for a more lifestyle-oriented pickup.
Tiguan-Inspired Styling
The Volkswagen Tukan adopts the brand’s latest SUV-inspired design language while incorporating styling elements designed specifically for a pickup.
At the front, the truck features slim LED headlights and a wide lower grille with a honeycomb pattern. The design bears clear similarities to Volkswagen’s latest Tiguan, while the raised body and rugged details give the Tukan a more utilitarian character.
The side profile features squared-off wheel arches, prominent body cladding and roof rails, reinforcing the vehicle’s rugged appearance.
The single-cab Robust version focuses on practicality, featuring unpainted bumpers and steel wheels. The double-cab Extreme takes a more premium approach, with a distinctive Canary Yellow launch color, dark alloy wheels, full-LED lighting and additional equipment around the cargo bed.
A First for Volkswagen’s MQB Platform
The Tukan is based on a heavily revised version of Volkswagen’s MQB platform, which is also used by models such as the T-Cross.
However, Volkswagen has made a significant change to the platform’s rear suspension architecture for the new pickup. Instead of the conventional torsion-beam setup commonly associated with MQB-based passenger cars, the Tukan uses a leaf-spring rear suspension.
The decision is aimed at improving the vehicle’s load-carrying capability while maintaining an acceptable level of ride comfort. This approach reflects the Tukan’s dual role as both a practical work vehicle and a lifestyle-oriented pickup.
Mild-Hybrid Powertrain Joins Flex-Fuel Engines
Volkswagen is planning several powertrain options for the Tukan, including traditional flex-fuel engines developed for the South American market.
One of the highlights will be a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TSI mild-hybrid engine. The electrified powertrain is expected to provide improved efficiency while maintaining the performance required from a compact pickup.
Before its introduction, the Tukan reportedly underwent more than 2 million kilometers of testing, with Volkswagen focusing on durability, load-carrying capability and suitability for the demanding conditions found across South America.
Built in Brazil With High Local Content
The Tukan is part of Volkswagen’s major investment program in South America. The company has committed approximately $3.9 billion to its regional operations, with the new pickup forming part of this broader strategy.
Production will take place at Volkswagen’s São José dos Pinhais plant in Brazil, with approximately 76% of the vehicle’s components sourced locally.
Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027.
With its combination of a compact footprint, flexible powertrain options, rugged suspension and modern Volkswagen styling, the Tukan is set to become an important new competitor in South America’s rapidly evolving compact pickup segment.
