MG Unveils the New MG 07, a Budget-Friendly Rival to the Porsche Taycan
Chinese automaker MG has officially revealed its new flagship sedan, the MG 07, a sleek fastback model that appears to take direct aim at premium electric vehicles like the Porsche Taycan — but at a fraction of the price.
Owned by Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor, MG says the new model delivers the styling and presence of luxury coupes priced around 700,000 yuan ($103,000) in China. However, the MG 07 is expected to start below 200,000 yuan, or roughly $29,000, making it one of the most aggressively priced performance-inspired EVs in its segment.
MG 07 Features Strong Porsche Taycan Design Influence
At first glance, the MG 07 bears a noticeable resemblance to the Porsche Taycan. The similarities are especially clear in the front-end lighting design, sloping roofline, and rear silhouette.
While the overall proportions echo Porsche’s electric sports sedan, the MG 07 adopts softer and more rounded body lines, giving it a less aggressive but more mainstream appearance.
The front fascia features a distinctive C-shaped lighting signature, a sculpted hood, and a large lower air intake that may incorporate an active grille system. MG has also integrated a visible front sensor array and a roof-mounted LiDAR unit, signaling the company’s ambitions in advanced driver assistance technology.
Coupe Styling Meets Advanced Technology
From the side profile, the MG 07 showcases flush door handles, aerodynamic fender vents, and a long coupe-style roofline designed to emphasize its sporty proportions.
The rear design continues the Taycan-inspired theme with a full-width taillight setup and elevated rear body structure. However, the MG appears taller and bulkier compared to Porsche’s lower-slung performance EV.
MG has not yet released full technical specifications, but the company confirmed the vehicle is built on SAIC Motor’s next-generation NEV (New Energy Vehicle) platform.
Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Versions Planned
According to MG, the 07 will be offered in both fully electric and plug-in hybrid variants, giving buyers multiple powertrain options depending on market demand.
Higher-end trims priced around 300,000 yuan (approximately $41,000) are expected to feature the Momenta R7 autonomous driving system. The platform reportedly supports advanced urban driving assistance and a seamless “parking lot-to-parking lot” autonomous driving experience.
MG claims the system goes beyond simply mimicking human driving behavior. Instead, it uses predictive environmental analysis designed to react more like an experienced driver, allowing the vehicle to proactively respond to potential hazards on the road.
Turquoise Lighting Signals Autonomous Driving Mode
One of the more unusual features announced for the MG 07 is a turquoise-colored external lighting system that activates during autonomous driving operation.
The lighting signature is intended to visually signal when the vehicle’s self-driving functions are active — a feature becoming increasingly common among next-generation EVs and autonomous vehicle concepts.
MG says additional specifications, performance details, and launch information will be shared in the coming weeks.
MG Continues Its Push Into Premium EV Segments
The reveal of the MG 07 highlights the growing confidence of Chinese automakers in the global premium EV market. By combining luxury-inspired styling, advanced software technology, and significantly lower pricing, brands like MG are increasingly challenging established European manufacturers.
If pricing remains as aggressive as expected, the MG 07 could become one of the most talked-about affordable luxury EV alternatives of the year.
